Is It Safe To Consume Alcohol During Pregnancy?

One of the most frequently asked questions by pregnant women is ‘whether it’s safe to drink alcohol’. The simple answer is ‘no’. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can cause irreparable damage to your unborn baby. Whether it’s binge-drinking or having two drinks a week, any amount of alcohol is considered extremely harmful for your baby’s mental and physical growth.

Effects of alcohol on your baby

Pregnant or not, alcohol causes extreme damage to your body. Now imagine the same alcohol entering your baby’s body. If you consume alcohol while pregnant, it will pass through the placenta into the baby’s bloodstream. This can cause severe damage to your baby’s brain and restrict cognitive growth and development.

Low birth weight, miscarriage, premature birth, stillbirth are some risks if you continue drinking while pregnant.

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is a series of mental, physical, behavioural and learning disabilities that might develop in your baby if you drink while you’re pregnant. There is no information on the levels of alcohol consumption that might cause this disorder, but any amount of alcohol is considered harmful for you and your baby.

Effects of alcohol on your body

Not only does alcohol consumption affect your baby but it also affects your bodily functions. High blood pressure, gestational diabetes, nutritional deficiency, dehydration and vomiting are some problems you might face.

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy is undeniably harmful. But having alcohol while you’re trying to conceive or after delivery is also best avoided. After delivery, the alcohol you drink will pass to your baby through breastfeeding which might cause cognitive and developmental problems.

Consumed alcohol before you knew you were pregnant?

If you’ve consumed small amounts of alcohol before you found out you were pregnant, there’s nothing to worry about. Studies show that the majority of babies who have been exposed to very small quantities of alcohol have not faced any harm. However, once you do know for sure that you’re pregnant, it’s best to quit right away.

Is it okay for men to consume alcohol while conceiving?

Women should definitely stay away from alcohol while conceiving, so should men. Studies show that the quality of the sperm reduces significantly with alcohol consumption. Not only that, but it also causes difficulty conceiving. It is also observed that children whose fathers consumed alcohol while trying to conceive have faced developmental problems.

It is best for men to stop drinking three months before they want to conceive to avoid any irregularities in the foetus. In fact, it’s easier for women to stop drinking when their husbands do too.

Pregnancy is a wonderful time which shouldn’t be hampered with negative experiences like alcohol. If you’re having trouble quitting, speak to your doctors and ask for help. There’s no way to know for sure how your alcohol consumption will affect your baby, so avoid it for you and your baby’s healthy and happy future.
